Willpower Youth Theatre exists as a direct result of requests made to us by local school children for a drama-based group to be created in the area back in the time when Willpower was a professional theatre company touring the north west. We began with fewer than a dozen members and we now have over 200. We’re proud of the fact that Willpower exists because young drama-minded people in Wigan want it to. We’re not a franchise and we operate on a non-profit-making basis, independent of any funding bodies.
An involvement in drama means so much more than developing performance skills. It allows the individual to gain confidence in dealing with life, in seeing things from other perspectives and in balancing their own motivations with those of other people. It also requires a good deal of self-discipline.
One of the many rewards of running Willpower is to see new members gradually gaining in confidence, discovering their own potential and finding their own place in the group. There have been a number of occasions when our members have achieved professional recognition on television or in the theatre (as a direct result of their involvement with Willpower). That is great, both for them and for us, but it isn’t the purpose of Willpower, it’s a happy by-product.
The best reason for the existence of this youth theatre is, as we have mentioned, because our members want it to exist, so that they can meet with their friends and have fun, and feel a part of something. As long as that continues to happen, hopefully we’ll be here to oversee it!
